May 2015 Living Vivdly Habit Challenge

Stop and Smell the Roses

For many of us, we live our lives immersed in a sea of scents but notice them only when they are particularly strong (pleasantly or unpleasantly). Let’s take some time to explore the world with an under-appreciated sense this month!

Habit:
Stop and smell the flowers
Breathe some fresh air

Daily:
Enjoy the scent of a food or beverage

To Do:
Explore the possibilities of herbs or essential oils in scenting your environment
Visit a garden or greenhouse
Evaluate your personal care, laundry, and cleaning products: are you masking the world of scent around you with artificial fragrances?

Reflection:
This challenge was really fun! Particularly since the lilacs were in bloom around the corner. 🙂 I’ve always had a keen nose, and I enjoyed challenging others to consider their use of fragrances. I have two friends who are chemically sensitive, so I’m always prepared to go fragrance-free for a day–but that’s partially possible because I gave up scented laundry detergents and fabric softeners years ago. (I think it was when I was washing all of those cloth diapers, actually.) When I grocery shop, I dread having things on my list that force me to go into the “smelly aisle” where lurk the air fresheners and cleaning products. The air in there is a nauseating chemical brew! How do you feel about chemical fragrances? What smells are a delight?

  1. Beautifully written and a great challenge! We do so often just go through the days never noticing the rich aromas around us. Our senses get dulled by life’s busyness and we miss out on many of the wonderful little things offered to us in each moment. Your challenge is a great reminder for each of us to live fully and present and breathe!
    Thanks Sunray!
